MISSION

To promote high-quality, family-centered, evidence-based maternity and newborn care, and improved health outcomes for all families. Our work focuses on addressing perinatal health disparities and engendering a more equitable maternity care system for all pregnant women, persons, and their infants.

WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO

As multicultural and multidisciplinary professionals serving  all pregnant and parenting families, we offer Community Doula services, childbirth preparation classes , breastfeeding support by Breastfeeding Peer Counselors ,  maternal-infant mental health workshops, and support groups  for pregnant and parenting women and expectant fathers and new fathers .

We also offer professional training and certification programs,  conferences  and networking opportunities for mental health and perinatal health professionals.

Our Main Projects Are:

Community Doula Program  which provides three prenatal visits, labor support, and three  postpartum visits to each mother or birthing person. No- one is turned away for inability to pay, because we believe EVERY family deserves a Doula. Your donation makes this possible.

FACTS ABOUT MATERNAL AND INFANT HEALTH

For too long America has failed to acknowledge the outrageous and seemingly intractable rates of poor maternal health and deaths of mothers in childbirth. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any industrialized country in the world. More than two women die every day in the US from pregnancy-related causes. And while the vast majority of countries have reduced their maternal mortality ratios, for the past 25 years the numbers of women lost during pregnancy, birth or postpartum have increased dramatically in the U.S.

African-American women in the U.S. are at especially high risk; they are nearly 4 times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications compared to European American women.

African-American babies are 2-1/2 times more likely to be born premature and die within the first year of life than Caucasian babies, even when studies controlled for socioeconomic status of the mother.

Hispanic women make up 46% of all women in LA County, but 50% of all maternal deaths.

African-American women make up 9.2% of all women in LA County, but 31.8% of all maternal deaths.

White women make up 28.9% of women in LA County, but only 4.5% of maternal deaths.

Women of color are less likely to go into pregnancy in good health because of a lack of access to primary health care services. They are also less likely to have access to adequate maternal health care services. Black women are by far the largest demographic to suffer these outcomes, it has been this way for decades and yet they are seldom able to make their voices heard.

"This is not just a health care crisis–it is a public health emergency” (Amnesty International)

Its time for change. Please be part of that change.
