We believe that everyone who wants a doula deserves that support.
Evidence shows that doula support is correlated with increased agency, a more positive birth experience, increased vaginal births, better infant outcomes, increased self-esteem, and decreased anxiety (Dekker, 2019).
However, the Ithaca Doula Collective recognizes that accessing doula care isn't financially feasible for all families. While New York State is piloting a doula program to have both birth and postpartum doulas paid for through Medicaid, this is not a state-wide initiative. Currently, the Ithaca Doula Collective has a multi-step plan to increase access to doula care in our community that is both sustainable and affordable for both families and doulas. In offering these services to the community, we are in turn, asking for your support. The IDC doulas regularly offer sliding scales and free births for families who are experiencing a loss, teens, and others on a case-by-case basis, but we want to offer more!
We are excited to announce: The IDC Doula Accessibility Fund! This is how it works:
Donors can choose to have their donation to the Ithaca Doula Collective go into a general fund, allocated to a birth fund, or to a postpartum support fund. Families who are participating in the MOMS, TP3 or WIC programs can fill out a simple application to hire a birth or postpartum doula through our website. The money from these funds will pay the doula, and the families are able to access doula care for FREE!
- The doulas have also reduced their standard rates when they are working with a family through this program. -
Birth Rates: $500 (includes two prenatal visits, on-call support during the month surrounding the due date, attending the birth, and 1 in-home postpartum visit)
Postpartum Rates: $20/hour (1-2 hour in-home visits)
If you or someone you know benefitted from the support of a doula, or if you feel like your birth or postpartum experience could have been different if you had access to a doula, you now have the ability to pay it forward! With the support of the larger community, every little bit helps, and no donation is “too small” to make a big impact. We are all well aware of the ways that our government and health care systems fail pregnant folks - especially people of color, trans, indigenous, or queer families. This is where the support of a doula can make a lasting impact. And this is where your donation can (and will) make a difference!
As the Doula Collective, our goal is to raise $7,200 by the end of 2019 so that we can offer 1 birth per month and 5 hours of postpartum care per month to members of our community beginning in 2020. Thank you for your support, it's making a difference in the future of our community!
