As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise exponentially, medical supplies across the country are becoming extremely scarce, leaving many doctors defenseless. With this increasingly limited supply, healthcare workers are forced to reuse face shields—which is strongly cautioned against by health officials due to inevitable contamination—and place themselves at even greater risk. This shortage of protective equipment has only exacerbated the pandemic, leaving families and communities devastated.
In order to aid local hospitals, Students for Hospitals began an initiative to address the critically low supply of protective face gear (pictured below, including a shortlist of materials utilized for each mask). With quick assembly time utilizing materials found at local office stores, our team of dedicated high school students hopes to widen the scope of our operations to better help the community. Since our protective shields have already been approved by healthcare professionals, the final step is to procure the necessary resources and supply as many hospitals and health clinics as we can with the proper equipment. Our face shields will be donated to various Bay Area hospitals, such as Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara, Stanford Hospital, Seton medical center, etc. Recently, we have begun focusing on nursing and senior homes that have less coverage compared to hospitals.
With the virus continuing to spread, we must each do our part to help mitigate the devastating effects on our friends and families. We appreciate any and all support on our mission to help local hospitals.
