In September 2024 I completed the construction of a Junior Secondary School (Sankoh Kwams Academy) in Tombo Bana village, in the Kaffu Bollum chiefdom of Port Loko district in Sierra Leone. It comprises of 12 classrooms, a library, and administrative offices. The aim is to promote the type of education that can encourage young people to learn about development issues in their communities and at national level. Please read the story behind this development.
I have eleven years of teaching experience in UK secondary schools and five years of teaching in an IB international schools in Africa. During these years in education, I developed the philosophy that secondary school education should have a national development agenda – to transform and empower young people to take ownership of development issues in their communities.
My vision is to run a secondary school that will support the national development agenda of Sierra Leone, targeting marginalised children in villages of Sierra Leone, in particular Tombo Bana village; and to encourage these young people to develop new hope in education as a means of improving their lives.
The school will operate on the foundation that young people should be able to critically approach the cultural, moral and political context of their lives, and to recognise that cultures are created by people and can be changed by people if they fail to serve important human needs.
Our teaching approach will encourage young people to develop the characteristics of caring, open-mindedness, reflectiveness, flexibility, inquiry and resilience.
We cannot embark on this development mission alone. We need your support. The money you donate will be used to help the school become sustainable. We need resources to equip our library, the science and maths department, the agricultural department, the technology department which includes ICT, and the human resources department which includes, art, drama and sports.
