Hi, my name is Kathy. I am studying for an MA in Psychodynamic Counselling Psychotherapy with children and adolescents. I am about to enter my final year but have been struggling financially and considering dropping out, so I mustered up the courage to ask for assistance.
This qualification means everything to me, I love supporting children and young people and helping them to overcome their fears and anxieties. I have spent many years caring for others and being unable (due to various reasons) to explore the possibility of paying for training to be a registered and accredited therapist. Eventually, I returned to education and pursued the traditional route and now have a lengthy student loan bill trailing behind me.
An essential and compulsory part of my course is personal therapy and supervision which I must complete weekly to pass the course. This adds up to an extra £4000 a year. I thought I could manage this extra expense but over the last year have realised that these extra costs along with the cost of living crisis have left me with large credit card bills. I am a sole earner and sole bill payer and have to face the fact that I have more money going out each month than I have coming into my account.
I am so passionate about continuing this journey and being able to help young people and their families to thrive and recover from mental health problems. I currently work as a mental health practitioner in schools while I am training and observing the alarming rise in emotional difficulties in young people since the pandemic. I want to continue the work I do and improve outcomes for young people while also being able to be trained and registered as an experienced, accredited therapist who will earn a wage modest enough to also help me live a good life.
It has been really hard for me to write this and I do not expect anyone to help but a good friend suggested this avenue to me last year and I ignored her advice to my own cost.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and do not feel obliged to help. You are welcome to forward this to anyone you feel might be able to support me.
