Help our Youth Have a Digital Mentor for Free

Deep down I have always known I should have been an architect. However, during my high school years, there was no one around to encourage me to choose a path that would have led me to become an architect. Now, 30 years have gone by and it is still on my mind. I frequently ask myself, what would have happened if I was guided by a mentor? Where would I be now?  Would I be happier and more fulfilled by pursuing my passion?

It turns out that I am not alone: 70% of students believe they are not prepared to make a career choice, and most don't have access to a mentorship program to help them.  Schools often lack the resources to offer one on one counseling, and instead rely on broad vocational assessments that are largely insufficient to help a young person find their passion and identify their purpose.  Defining the direction of your career and to a greater part, life, takes time, trial and error, exploration and lots of guidance. It is an overwhelming decision for a young person to take. However, there is good news!  Technology can help, but to get this in motion, I need your support.

For the past six years during my travel throughout eleven countries, I have been closely involved in running programs for students ranging from 14 to 19 years old.  During this time, I have observed one common behavior:   When students are pressed to decide to enroll in a university and pick a certain career, they are often very confused about their strengths, preferences and even what they are passionate about.  Their choice of what to study or even where to study, is often heavily influenced by someone other than themselves.  As they become fully engaged in the college application process, they are likely to develop second thoughts and self-doubt about their decision. It’s a proven fact that when their workload increases, and the pressure rises, many teens choose to drop out:  A research from the Bill Gates Foundation has estimated that 45% of these students in the US will abandon their education, and this percentage rate can be as high as 80% in other countries.  Yet, there are studies, like the one that appeared in the Harvard Business Review, "Positive Intelligence," that show that when people are connected to a sense of purpose, their chances of success increases by three times!  And while challenges will always appear, clarity of purpose will help them overcome obstacles blocking their career pathways.

This is why I believe that the answer for many young people is a digital mentor, that is easy to access and always available. What do I mean by a digital mentor?  Basically, it is a conversational artificial intelligence algorithm, that can help students identify their purpose, that can remember previous interactions so it can better guide students, and that can even challenge them to think deeper, harder.  It can help present possible paths and plans for consideration, offer curated content about scholarships, careers and different occupations in the location of choice.  It can even show real life experiences using virtual reality!

The project of building a digital mentor is a major endeavor. Initially, it involves developing a data model, a software backend, integrating the backend to a machine learning algorithm, developing a conversational AI, and an easy to use front end. It requires creating a software architecture for all the pieces to work together, and a group of passionate software developers to implement and bring to market. It also needs testers and last but not least, a seasoned project/product manager to keep everyone focused and on track.

By funding this cause, you could potentially help millions of young students find their purpose, be more fulfilled and successful in life.  Life is about choices, and deciding what you like to study shouldn’t have to be a terrifying decision to make.  With a digital mentor, every student will be better positioned to find their passion and align their studies to their purpose. Eventually, have a far greater chance to pursue what they love.  Like in my case, architecture!

The money raised will go towards the development of the app, at no cost to the students.

As you decide how to help me make the Digital Mentor a reality, I'd like for you to know that your contribution is more than a donation; it's a  is a social impact investment!
