Desks for COVID homeschoolers

As many of you know, I enjoy making furniture. I have made most of my kids furniture--including the desks they have in their rooms. It got me thinking about how easy we have it in our house right now. Warm, quiet places for the kids to work, internet access, computers, desks, two parents at home -- and how that is not the way the story is playing out for so many others. It also challenged me to think that if I am willing to do things like build desks for my kids, why shouldn’t I be willing to find a way to do that for others who arguably need it so much more?
So, the idea was born to build and donate hand-made desks to families and kids around Boston who could use some unexpected, no-strings-attached joy during these times. Kim and I have made 5 desks so far. We have been donating them to Furnishing Hope of MA , a local non-profit organization that sources and delivers furniture and home goods to families who are transitioning from homeless and domestic violence shelters into stable housing. 5 desks has been more of a “trial run” to get started and work out some of the kinks. But we are hoping to make a lot more.
THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. I am asking for your help to keep this going -- and hopefully grow. There are a few ways you can help and I would be so very grateful if you would consider supporting us. Here are some ideas ordered from least to most “hands-on”:
(1) A donation. Each $100 donation we receive allows us to build and donate 1 desk. If you would like to make a contribution toward supplies -- please consider donating via this page.
(2) I’d like to help make these! All skill levels are welcome. Seriously, you can do this. If you just want to paint some drawers, do a little sanding, try your hand at assembling and gluing a frame together, or if you’d like to use this as a win-win opportunity to learn some beginning woodworking skills -- we have something for you and I’d be happy to teach you!
(3) Just give me the plans -- I got this! If you are already handy around a table saw and you’d like to make these desks, or have another design you’d like to build -- please reach out! We’d love to join forces!
