TALENT SHOW: May 26, 2016
Detroit Community Schools (DCSD), a K-12 charter school district, is located in one of the poorest and most blighted areas of Detroit, Brightmoor. DCSD has been named a "Reward School" by the Michigan Department of Education and has, since the new administration arrived in 2012, graduated 98% of the senior class. Test scores and grades have improved dramatically. How did we do this?
We know that children can become products of their experiences, in spite of their environment. Nothing builds self- esteem better than applause. Since 2013, with the combined efforts of staff and students, DCSD and the Detroit Music Hall have partnered to showcase the talents of student at an annual Talent Show. A donation of the stage helped to make the show possible but costs for stagehands and other Music Hall personnel had to be raised. There are also costs associated with bussing parents to the venue, as most of our parents do not have cars and could not otherwise attend the performance.
The theme for this year's show addresses the world in which they live, the fears and the joys of their experiences. It gives tribute to the people and the community that creates the solutions for them.
This fundraiser will provide an opportunity for these students to shine. Please give what you can. If you prefer to mail a contribution, please mail it in care of Music Hall Show to
DCSD at 12675 Burt Road, Detroit MI, 48223.
We appreciate your help!
