Daves's Action Track Chair

Imagine that you have a great zest for life - you feel unstoppable with your independent attitude and care-free spirit - always dreaming of the future and all the things you would like to accomplish. You get a high from life itself, loving to be around people and helping out anyone who needs it. You work hard your whole life raising a family and enjoy seeing them grow up and start families of their own, sharing your life-lessons and giving advice as a father would do.

Then, one day you wake up and everything changes. You are the same person, but now you are trapped inside your own body. You are easily tired; your arms and legs are unable to function like they used to. It is hard to walk without assistance, whether it be a cane, walker, or wheelchair. You lose your balance easily. You are unable to enjoy the things you used to, like going into the woods to experience nature, carrying on conversations with loved ones, or going for a Sunday drive. Your independence is taken away and you now have to depend on others to get you where you need to go or even complete simple day-to-day tasks.

This is what happens to a person with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a progressive, degenerative movement disorder that effectively destroys dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Some symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, slowness of movement, impaired balance and coordination, and changes in speech and gait. Treatment can help with the symptoms, but there is no cure.

Dave was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at the age of 47, in 2002. His children and their spouses have set-up this fundraiser for help in obtaining a specialized all-terrain wheelchair, the Action Trackchair. This chair will allow him to be able to better enjoy life by increasing his mobility and independence, allowing him to travel around the farmstead and many other places, even into woods and water! You can click here  for more details about the chair. We are trying to raise $15,000, as this would allow us to purchase the chair and add some accessories.

Thank you for all your support!
