Dear friends and family,
As some of you already know, Marcus had an accident while body surfing with Mason. He has a spinal cord injury classified as a C7 with 3 column injury. We are thankful in the fact that the neuro surgeon told us that had it been any higher he would either be dead or completely paralyzed. The fracture in the 7th vertebrae and the way it is dislodged is rare and requires very strategic surgical treatment. The recovery ahead for him is very long. If all goes as planned, he will spend a few days in ICU post surgery and about 7-10 days total in the hospital. Depending on how recovery is going, he may require a residential physical therapy for 2-3 weeks and then at home therapy for up to three months. He will also be required to wear a neck brace for at least 3 months. There are many risks involved and he may get worse due to swelling before he gets better meaning some temporary weakness in his extremities due to swelling. In all, they told us this will be a marathon and that it will be a life changing injury and will take up to 2 years for whatever full recovery he will have. It is a lot to take in but we also know that man’s wisdom and projections may not be God’s plan and that He is the Great Physician and can heal In any way and time frame that He wills. Marcus is in excruciating pain which the drs. said will be worse post surgery because of all the nerves involved. I am asking for prayer on many different levels. He is in the UCSD medical center trauma unit and receiving amazing care. His surgery is at 1:00 on 9/23/18. Please pray for everything and everyone involved in this very delicate surgery. Please pray for relief from pain. Please pray for Marcus's mental health as he comes to terms with his recovery. As most people know, surfing is his passion and will be gone for at least two years if not indefinitely. Please pray for Mason who was with him and is very traumatized over the whole series of events. Please pray for our family as we maneuver the schedules as I travel back and forth from the hospital and meet the needs of our kids. Pray for how this will all work out regarding his job and my work schedule as we readjust our lives to give him the most attentive and dedicated care we can. Marcus has always been so strong, brave and faithful and today he has been the strongest person I have ever seen! I have already received so many beautiful notes of prayer and encouragement throughout the evening and we are so incredibly grateful for all of it! I wanted to give everyone an update all at once so that specific prayers can be raised up on my precious husband's behalf! I will keep updating as we know more!
