Police Brutality Leaves Family Fatherless

In December 2020, Luis Miguel Almanzar was fatally shot and killed, leaving his family of three children fatherless. My name is Yolanda Custodio and I have never had the pleasure of meeting Luis, but his mother Maria Jacqueline Polanco, known as Jackie for short, has blessed my family with her love and care for years. 

I met Jackie when I was pregnant with my youngest daughter. I needed help caring for my home while I was with child. Instantly, she became an important family member because of the kindness she showed my family. I soon found out that we shared the same birthday which made our relationship all the more sweet. Year after year we became closer. She taught me how to cook traditional Dominican food, which made my husband (whose family is also from the Dominican Republic), love Jackie even more.

One sad December day, Jackie facetimed me hysterically crying. I was not sure what was happening through her tears, but soon learned that her oldest son was killed for playing his music "too loud." Luis had a promising future and was in the process of immigrating to the United States. He recently received his visa. His dream was to bring his wife and three children to America in 2021 to be closer to  his mother. Now that he has passed away, immigration has closed his case, but Jackie is trying to adopt his children. She hopes to achieve her son's dream of getting his family to the United States.

Mi nombre es Yolanda Custodio y nunca tuve el placer de conocer a Luis, pero su madre María Jacqueline Polanco, conocida como Jackie para abreviar, ha bendecido a mi familia con su amor y cuidado durante años. Conocí a Jackie cuando estaba embarazada de mi último hijo. Necesitaba ayuda para cuidar de mi casa mientras estaba embarazada. Instantáneamente, se convirtió en un miembro importante de la familia debido a la amabilidad que mostró a mi familia. Pronto descubrí que compartíamos el mismo cumpleaños, lo que hizo que nuestra relación fuera aún más dulce. Año tras año nos volvimos más cercanos. Ella me enseñó a cocinar comida tradicional dominicana, lo que hizo que mi esposo (cuya familia también es de República Dominicana) amara a Jackie aún más. Un triste día de diciembre, Jackie me llamo por Facetime con un llanto histérico. No estaba segura de lo que estaba pasando a través de sus lágrimas, pero pronto supe que su hijo mayor fué asesinado por tocar su música "demasiado fuerte". Luis tenía un futuro prometedor y estaba en proceso de emigrar a Estados Unidos. Recientemente recibió su visa. Su sueño era traer a su esposa y sus tres hijos a Estados Unidos en 2021 para estar más cerca de su madre. Ahora que falleció, inmigración cerró su caso, pero Jackie está tratando de adoptar a sus hijos. Ella espera lograr el sueño de su hijo de traer a su familia a los Estados Unidos. Su donación cubrirá los honorarios de los abogados, los gastos de viaje y mantendrá a su viuda e hijos con los gastos diarios.
