While speaking of summer festivals during a recent roll-call meeting of the Chicago Police Department; a police sergeant named the African/Caribbean International Festival of Life (IFOL) the best summer Festival in Chicago! This was unrelated to wealth, income or attendance. Instead, our annual family-friendly event was recognized for its diversity, peace and harmony -- no problems, no complaints, no calls to 911 over the past 10 years!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Each year, since 2012, the Martin's International Foundation and the Martin's International Festival of Life make cash donations of thousands of dollars to provide summer camp fun, educational outings and other activities for more than 100 at-risk and other children.

Also, in 2015, our volunteers have visited various communities to give away more than 5,000 complimentary tickets to underprivileged youngsters (as well as adults, including seniors). These giveaways expose Chicagoans to the cultures and lifestyles of peoples of the Americas and Africa. This is a way to also keep kids off dangerous streets and to educate them about the heritage of others from around the world. The themes adopted since the IFOL’s inception in 1993 are “Bringing Nations Together” and Living Together As One.”
During the July 4th week, often the most dangerous week for kids in Chicago, our activities involve children with fun activities that help them:
• Learn about the various drums and other instruments from other countries in our Emerging Star contest and more
• Learn before and during the “Know Your American and African Heritage” Scholastic Bowl

• Learn about the tradition, culture and lifestyle of people from more than fifty countries

• Enjoy sportsmanship and exercise during summer soccer tournaments

• Encourage young people to express their talents on the gospel/health/educational stage

• Enjoy fun and games that also include arts and crafts
