Cullen's COVID-19 Medical Fund

Donation protected
At the request of friends, family and community members we are creating this Go Fund Me to accept donations towards our son's medical expenses.  All money raised will go towards Cullen's medical and air transport costs, travel expenses associated with the hospitalization and any further medical needs he may have in store for him.

Shortly after our 3 kids, my husband and myself tested positive for COVID-19 our 4 month old son, Cullen, started showing visible signs of brain swelling.

His soft spot was visibly protruding over a period of hours (you can see it below in the side by side taken just 36 hours apart), he broke out in a rash all over his face and body that would come and go, he stopped feeding and was very upset and in obvious discomfort.  We rushed him to the local hospital and he was immediately airlifted to Denver Children's Hospital from Nebraska, more than 6 hours away.

Before and after of swelling. These photos were taken just 36 hours apart. You can visibly see his soft spot protruding.

The doctors confirmed he was suffering from brain swelling as a result of COVID-19.  A team of doctors performed countless tests and imagining to confirm his diagnosis.  They stated he was the first documented case of brain swelling as a result of COVID-19 at their hospital, so we are unaware of what the future may hold for him, his treatment plan or how long this will continue.

3 weeks later he is still showing visible signs of swelling and discomfort, but is finally feeding again and has moments of pure joy which bring us so much relief.  We are having to measure the circumference of his head every 2 hours to monitor the swelling and have been told if his swelling progresses we will have to airlift him back to Denver for further treatment.

While he is seeming to be doing better at this time, we are not out of the woods yet and are unsure what this means for our son's future.  The doctors have asked us to follow up with a Pediatric Neurologist to continue his monitoring and see what damage may have resulted from this.  We've been warned this could be a long road and potentially have lifelong effects for Cullen.  But we are staying positive and hopeful for his full recovery.

We went public with our son and family's story to help educate the community on the potential for these symptoms in young children.  We have received so many kind and uplifting responses to our story and support from our community during our quarantine.  We are beyond thankful and blessed for everyone's prayers, well wishes and generosity towards our son and family.  We cannot thank the community enough for everything they have done for us and for those who have shared our story.

This virus is so much more than just the flu or common cold and it truly affects children as much as it affects adults.  All 3 of our children suffered terribly through the entire process.  Please please keep an eye out for signs of brain swelling in infants diagnosed with COVID-19.   Thank you for your support and for sharing our story.
