My name is Megan Burke and I am an advocate for mental health & wellness. My involvement in mental health advocacy began ten years ago in support of my sibling and has grown as my generation has become destabilized by a mental health crisis. Last year, suicide was the second leading cause of death for young people (ages 10-14), while 44% reported experiencing persistent hopelessness & sadness (https://www.nami.org/mhstats). Our mission at Cuerd@s is to provide those experiencing mental health challenges an empowering, dignified strategy for de-escalation. We embroider tactile patches in strategic places on clothing to guide the wearer into self-soothing positions and donate pieces to inpatient psychiatric units and mental health programs.
