#HelpChennai Covid Affected

BPANDEMIC  CHALLENGES
In Chennai the continuous lockdown norms and rapid spread of virus is pushing the disadvantaged people of the city to a survival crisis mode. The dulling down of economic activity has resulted in severe income loss causing anxiety and desperation for a vast majority of the people.   The most affected have been the - Stranded migrant labourers  - Daily wage earners - Small businesses - Roadside dwellers and drifters - Poor with Chronic illness and  sicknesses and Poor undergoing treatments.  However the need to serve people has brought together many NGO's and volunteer groups in full force towards sharing expertise and resources.  Our team is on the ground with more than 200 volunteers/20+ NGOs are addressing all areas of COVID relief work.

NEEDS IDENTIFIED
1) Food Rations - Dry rations for those who no longer have savings or income to support their basic needs.
2) Supply of cooked/fresh food - This is for roadside dwellers, abandoned, drifters, stranded migrant labourers and others stranded in the city and its outskirts.  Cooked food also to those who are quarantined without family support.
3) Medical Interventions - Testing, supplying of immunity boosters , distributing medicine and offering guidance and support to those with symptoms or positive results are some of the work we do on a daily basis.
4) Counseling - offering support to those who are affected by the volatile and insecure situation in the society has also become a critical need.  Loss of investment, closure of businesses, loss of job, non-payment of salary,  medical conditions, fear of sickness  have all contributed to severe stress to those vulnerable.  Depression and domestic abuse  are also seeing a sharp rise in numbers.
5) Logistics - . Helping the movement of migrant out of state workers back to their own states in collaboration with governmental authorities.  Co-ordinating movement of supplies and personnel through  proper procurement of permissions from the authorities is also an important relief measure.
6) Housing Security - paying rent has become a major challenge for a great number of people in the city because income generation has been nil for more than 2 months. We foresee a huge requirement emerging in this regards.
7) Training out-reach-workers:- the pandemic situation is constantly evolving and a new need to train and roll out home diagnostic efforts are underway.  Testing not only with infrared temperature guns and Pulse oximeters but also making large-scale availability of  at-home  diagnostic tests can only help combat the situation.

SUCCESSES
Migrant Labourers :- In the first two months of lockdown our team has worked with a network of like-minded people across India and successfully arranged for the safe return of thousands of stranded migrant labourers. Chennai proved to be the hub for many workers from the other places in Tamilnadu. This included identifying them, registering with government digital platforms, settling them in government approved facilities for shelter, supporting them in procuring tickets, providing them food during their time of waiting, providing food in the shelter and supplies for their journey home, tracking their journey and ensuring they reached their destinations.
Supply  of  cooked food/ Dry rations  For more than a month now  we have mobilised supply of cooked food everyday to 1000 persons who are destitutes in the city and more than 2000 families have been supplied with dry rations costing around Rs1000/month.
Community intervention program for almost  1/10th of the population of Chennai city  in partnership with government agencies and authorities such as Greater Chennai Coroporation from 19th June 2020.
