The Philippines has become one of the main countries from which migrant nurses are recruited into the NHS. Filipino care workers are also in large numbers in the U.K.’s care homes. They are playing a vital role in Britain’s fight against the pandemic.
Filipino health and care workers face the risks of being on the frontline of fighting the virus like all other health and care workers in the U.K. However many Filipino health workers and care workers suffer the additional anxiety of having to worry about their children and families back home in the Philippines.
Many other Filipinos work in very low paid and insecure jobs, some have a restricted immigration status with no recourse to public funds, others are undocumented. They often live in cheap overcrowded accommodation. Undocumented workers often fear to seek medical help.
Several organisations have come together to set up the COVID19 Filipino Response project. These include:
The Iglesia Filipino Indepencia/CoE Filipino Chaplaincy and the Kanlungan Consortium of Filipino Organisations (which includes the Filipino Domestic Workers Association, GABRIELA, Bahay -Kubo Housing Association, Campaign for Human Rights in the Philippines, BAYANIHAN Leicestershire Filipino, Tanglaw, Philippine Theatre UK, Kings Filipino Student Society. Greenwich Filipino Group).
Our joint effort will provide the following support to the vulnerable members of our community:
Deliveries of food, groceries, and medicines
Spiritual chaplaincy support (by phone and online) for those suffering from anxiety and depression
Employment, housing and welfare information and advice
Advice and support for those suffering violence at home and at the workplace, especially for domestic workers
Special cooked Filipino meal deliveries to health workers in hospitals curtesy of Filipino Chef groups
Targeted support to undocumented migrants in the community
Kanlungan Filipino Consortium is a registered charity which has been serving the Filipino community for more than 25 years
