A hellish cascade of health issues and complications no one saw coming…

Danny and Angie Cochran are walking through a hellish year right now. If you know them, you know they’re doing it hand-in-hand, with firm faith in God as healer and comforter, but this journey has been relentless. Recovery is slow and uncertain. Danny’s year began with a third degree burn on his foot that resulted in two amputated toes, and today he is recovering from not only brain surgery but also from open heart surgery.

The burn happened early in the year, but by March his wounds from amputation were not healing and blood flow testing showed a one hundred percent blockage in an artery. He then underwent an artery bypass in the right leg in May 2023. Complications, including swelling and bleeding, led to three more surgeries and a 27-day hospital stay. One month post-op, his leg incisions were red, so he was given oral antibiotics for a possible skin infection.

Danny then developed C-Diff, a bad bacteria in the digestive tract that grows out of control when antibiotics kill all the good bacteria in the gut. Severely dehydrated, he was hospitalized again in August. Lab work showed a blood infection that required IV antibiotics at home.

Then four weeks later, in September 2023, Danny suddenly lost vision in the right eye. He complained of a headache and showed confusion. At the ER again, a CAT scan showed an aneurysm in his brain that was bleeding. He was immediately life-flighted to a different hospital where brain surgery was performed to stop the bleeding. He has ongoing vision loss and confusion that may last 3-6 months while his brain heals.
Two days after brain surgery, a heart test showed infection in his heart. Then on October 4, 2023, Danny underwent open heart surgery to replace the aortic valve, repair the aorta, and repair the mitral valve – all areas of the heart damaged by the infection.

Today, October 6, Danny remains in critical condition with breathing and heart rhythm issues. There is some discussion of a possible pacemaker placement. With all of these ongoing health issues, Danny has only worked 3 weeks since March 2023. To be with him in the hospital and care for him at home, Angie has missed 12 weeks of work and is now without pay since June because she ran out of vacation time.
Danny has a long recovery ahead between the brain and heart issues, and Angie, a nurse practitioner, will remain out of work for some time to care for him at home and take him to appointments, as he cannot drive.

Please consider donating to this wonderful couple. They are walking through a season of unimaginable stress and uncertainty. Danny needs time to recover, and Angie needs to be there to manage his medically frail condition when he does return home. Let them lean on all of us for household bills, medicine, and groceries; let us all prop them up while they make their way to the other side of this hellish year.
