Support language exchange & community in BC

Language Partners BC is a place that people who care about languages and their communities can call home.  Our vision is a caring, connected society helping each other learn - and our mission is to provide support, events, programs, and connection to make that happen.  We connect people together on a journey of learning, and we build a community of caring people.

We’ve been doing this work for five years now, and we need your help to continue building this community and making this impact.

We’re launching our first fundraiser just in time for our 5th birthday.  Our fundraiser has these key goals:

·      Help us cover the digital infrastructure costs we need to pay in order to offer our programming online in a COVID world.  We’ve already incurred some of these costs in order to keep our Spring programming online, and this fundraiser will help us make sure that our key programming - connecting people learning languages - can go ahead.

·      Help us incorporate as a nonprofit cooperative association to make sure we can continue our work in the future.  That’s right. We’re becoming official. We hope that as a cooperative association, we can continue to practice and model mutual aid, transparency, democratic decision making, and community engagement.  We’re built on the idea of people helping each other - that's what a co-op is and what a co-op does. We need your help to keep helping our community connect.

We have a bold and ambitious goal of reaching our fundraising total by April 12, 2021 - our 5th birthday.

“Your program is really helpful, especially for the newcomers. They can improve their languages and make new friends here. Native partners can give newcomers lots of advices on how to live well in Vancouver, just like what my partner did. I hope more people can know your program and join your program.”

“One thing I liked was learning about problems that immigrants are facing and empathizing as they are learning a challenging language themselves.”

Here’s more about the impact we’ve made:

In the last five years, our volunteer facilitators have run over 35 language exchange programs in Vancouver and Victoria for free. When COVID-19 changed our world, we moved our programs online, increasing access to the entire province. Whether you are brand new to British Columbia or have lived here for generations, you can join a program and find others who want to share languages.

“I liked the connection with others during this very isolating time.”

In the past, we’ve also organized a festival to bring people together and imagine what the future of language diversity will look like, including the resurgence of Indigenous languages. We hope to hold many more events in the future.

Receiving this money would mean so much to us. It would confirm that we can pool our resources to free, low-barrier programs and events, thanks to the support of the community.

We feel so grateful to have already connected and worked with so many fantastic participants, facilitators, and community partners. With your help, LPBC can continue to bring more people together to meet their personal language goals and also to create valuable friendships.

Thanks for helping support the future of Language Partners BC!!
