The objective of our campaign by the Muslim Social Services is to dedicate support to women of a visible minority in the KW region through counseling. Your reinforcement motivates us to continue our ongoing counseling services that have helped many clients in their daily life and dealing with complications of domestic abuse, family violence, and suicidal thoughts. The counseling sessions are not limited to those dealing with trauma, loss or grief, depression, addiction, and low self-esteem.
Muslim Social Services offers diversity training workshops, seminars about Islam and Muslims, and training workshops for school administrators, university and college staff, health professionals, police, social workers and other community organizations. Such training workshops help members of organizations develop a keen awareness of Islam devoid of stereotypes and grasp the diversity of Muslims in Canada. It assists institutions in supporting their Muslim clients, students or colleagues in a supportive manner.
We encourage you to become a donor in continuing our counseling services to refugees and newcomers. Due to the program running being free of charge, we would be delighted to receive as much as possible.
The KW area has seen an increase in immigrants who have no place to get help from; nevertheless, women of minority groups have nowhere to go in facing trauma. With the taboo culture regarding counseling or discussing one’s issues with an outsider, we have come to target our services to culturally sensitive families easily.
Our counselors, with proper training and etiquette, have been able to break the gap between them and sensitive discussion topics. Within some cultures, domestic abuse is accepted as a result; women do not have the right to stand up for themselves. However, the services we provide allow them to view a constructive approach to the trauma they face daily and outside their home in society. The counseling sessions feel more like therapy and a time for the attendee to talk, relieving themselves of thoughts.
One of our clients shared feedback about their experience with counseling sessions:
“ I feel more confident and wish my time with the counselor was longer. The sessions have helped me manage various emotions and intrusive thoughts, and the most important part has been developing coping skills in situations I was unable to be in before! I am certain this school year is meant for me; I will be able to focus on my studies more and work on myself.”
Many refugees or new immigrants can face physical abuse, be discriminated against, and have to deal with trauma, stress, and cultural orders that come with moving to a new country. Unfortunately, many immigrants needing counseling services are not given a chance due to financial struggles or even language barriers. Notwithstanding, MSS KW contributes through fee sessions that have always been a success. Our sessions were provided in Gujarati, Arabic, Hindi, Kutchi, Swahili, and English.
Unfortunately, this process will be halted as the funds we covered for free counseling is over. That is why we motivate you to support and grant us your help in any manner you can.
We are delighted by how our sessions have been going for individuals of low income and the efforts we have made to come thus far.
However, our funds for the program are insufficient for paying counselors and the in-office session location rentals. MSS would like to welcome any support from our past donors and prospective partners.
Women and men both have an opportunity to come to our session to talk or discuss their life events. We know that with some topics, individuals are more hesitant to indulge in; however, our meetings have been successful in helping persons with a sensitive backgrounds.
With the funds we will receive, our goal is to raise awareness of human trafficking and provide meetings with the victims, further helping those who are victims of domestic abuse through our free sessions. The counseling sessions would also be of a continuum with raising this fund. It would be a shame not to continue this great work that has been going on for years through MSS’s efforts for immigrants and newcomers.
