Corona Virus and Cholera Aid in Zanzibar

With the Corona Virus spreading around the world and cases being discovered in Zanzibar, it is only a matter of time before it takes over the island. We have seen this happen in many countries, where social distancing and following the health guidelines is easy to do.
So imagine what would happen if you did not have the basic means to follow such rules?
For those living in poverty, it is very challenging to fulfill the basic needs like washing hands with soap and social distancing due to the lack of or no income.
Yet, something so simple could make such a difference.
In Zanzibar, many rely on tourism for income, which has now been suspended due to the pandemic. They have an underfunded health system which caters for 350,000 patients during 'normal' capacity, and with social distancing being a challenge, due to condensed living conditions, it is unknown of the severity of what will happen when the Corona Virus occurs.
Expats, volunteers and tourists of this peaceful island are all worried for what's to come to the wonderful people here; especially as during this time of the rainy season; cholera, typhoid, malaria become more prevalent.
How ZANREC want to help
ZANREC is the No.1 recycling company on the island that works with the hotels to recycle the waste here, in a sustainable and moral way. Right now, there are no tourists and therefore no hotels are open.
ZANREC wants to use this time to help the community who we feel is vulnerable and in need of support.
Our aim is to provide jobs for those on the island to make bars of soap which will be distributed to those in the local villages by our staff and collaborations with NGOs. Teachings of good hygiene, how to wash your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds and talks on social distancing will be provided by ZANREC staff.
ZANREC desperately feel that this will help contain the Corona Virus and stop it from spreading across the entire island, and will also help with cholera and the many other mix of diseases the people here face.
Your donations will go straight to those making the soaps, providing families with an income during this desperate time, and will also pay for the ingredients to make the soap bars which will be given freely to all who need it.
Your kind donations will make a difference to those in Zanzibar, who are not fortunate enough to be able to wash their hands and stay at home, to wait for the tornado of diseases and viruses to be over. Let's be the difference that provides them with the basic needs that we take for granted - washing our hands with soap.
