My name is Corey McQuade and I am an aspiring Eagle Scout from Troop 22 in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania. I’ve been in Boy Scouts since I was seven years old. In my twelve years of scouting, I have completed over 300 hours of volunteer work. I’ve participated in local food drives, marathon benefits, community clean ups, and caroling at nursing homes.
I am the youngest member in the Friends of Ryerss volunteer group and have helped run the summer movie nights, Crafty Kids event, hosted weddings on the grounds, a haunted Halloween tour, the remote control race course for community visitors, and I even dressed in Victorian clothes and walked around the museum at their holiday events.
The Ryerss Museum was formerly the home of the benevolent Ryerss family. When Robert, the last descendant passed; his wife honored his will by bequeathing the home and surrounding land to the City of Philadelphia in 1905 “to be used as a park, library, and museum.” The will stipulated it would be “free to the people forever.” The Ryerss Museum was turned into a non profit museum and library in 1910.
The Ryerss Museum holds a special place in my heart, as it is located right in my community of Burholme. For my Eagle Scout project, I am planning a beautification event at the Ryerss Museum on October 24th and 25th, 2020. I will preserve the building’s historic characteristics by replacing the iconic community sign that was recently retired due to weather and decay. I will also clean the window shutters, paint the Victorian urn and light poles, and spruce up the gardens with new mulch and plants. I have the support of both my Boy Scout Troop and the Friends of Ryerss, but I still need your help in raising enough funds to accomplish my goals. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Cleaning Supplies (Safety Masks, Disinfectant, Trash Bags, Gloves, etc.): $100
Gardening Supplies (Mulch, Flowers, Tools, etc.): $425
Painting Supplies (Paint, Brushes, Rollers, Drop Cloths, etc.): $325
Food/Drinks for Volunteers: $50
