Community Safety - Midtown Toronto
Donation protected
The Toronto midtown community has come together in an effort to bring awareness to recent safety and public health issues in the area.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a need for housing, the City of Toronto opened three homeless shelters in mid-town: 55-65 Broadway Avenue and the Roehampton Residence (corner of Eglinton and Mount Pleasant) without following standard protocols for community engagement and consultation.
The City signed a two-year lease for the Roehampton Residence, however, the Broadway leases terminate on 31 August 2020
We, the residents of this neighbourhood, fear for not only our safety, but for those that are in need of the shelter and have no choice but to live among criminals, and the students who will be returning to the five schools that surround the new shelters.
We have been making pleas to have our voices heard as the increase in crime, theft, violence, discarded drug paraphernalia, drug use, human feces, and general feelings of insecurity are a daily occurrence.
This fund is being created to cover the costs associated with signage, posters, photocopying, etc as we bring awareness to make community safety a priority. Anything that remains after funds have been allocated will be determined by way of a survey of those that have donated.
Should you wish to donate in other capacities - much needed personal hygiene products and toiletries for the residents of the Roehampton shelter are bring collected at the rally on August 15th and you are welcome to drop off new/unused products in a box that will be clearly labeled.
