TO MY COMMUNITY WRITING FOR HELP IN  PREVENTING HOMELESSNESS AND CONTINUING OUR STRUGGLE!!!.

I'm currently facing two impending crises: (1) my partner's health; and (2)  eviction and homelessness on and after June 5, 2019  unless I can raise $2,200.00 for rent. We rented our current place under extreme duress.I was in my 14th successful year on life-time parole , after serving 31-years , and under parole board orders to immediately  find a new place to live. I couldn't live with my my daughter (who had undergone 3 of what was to become at least 8 abdominal surgeries). I couldn't be on her lease because of my record. My record combined with the fact that my partner and I had no credit history, because we paid our bills on time and never sought credit, kept preventing me from finding a decent affordable place for us to live after almost a year continuously searching. My partner was working, caring for her best friend (dying from a brain disease), fighting traffic every day to come in support me in my cancer recovery, as well as, physically and financially supporting the  Committee of Friends and Relatives of Prisoners (the organization I founded) and other ongoing organizing efforts. She also was under pressure to move out of her apartment complex. So when we looked at place that required neither a CORI or credit check, we felt we had no choice but to take it for one lease term only at $2,150 a month. We did not know at the time that there were hidden  astronomical utility costs due to a faulty all-electric heating system, or that my cancer would return and I'd undergo 3 throat surgeries, have the  lymph nodes in my neck removed, lose 50 pounds, spend a month in a nursing home on a feeding tube, undergo 12 weeks of radiation, (which caused me to have most of my teeth replaced) and chemotherapy, (which put me in the hospital with aseptic meningitis).  I also suffered a brain injury and was hospitalized after a major car accident. I was forced to retire .

My partner covered everything, $12,000 to replace my teeth, rent, utilities, food, clothing, insurance, gasoline, birthday and other gifts for my grand children and her niece and nephew totaling $300,000.00. During this period my partner's mother died, father became seriously ill, aunt was killed by a motor vehicle, and her young nephew died; and she is now seriously ill and in constant pain. She is a beautiful person (gifted artist) who always says we have to know what it means to be human. We both now live on $1,084.00 monthly retirement income and whatever  money can be raised from sporadic consulting jobs. I'm currently waiting to hear on a contract that would give me an income but it will not come through in time to prevent "Armageddon."

I've also  tried to help the community  and would like to be able to continue. I'm 72 years old,  and over the last 50-years, I’ve fought both inside and outside (after my release from 31 years incarceration),  against overwhelming odds to help people. I've helped to stop: home foreclosures; evictions and utility shut-offs, and organized free benefits, for friends and relatives of prisoners and others, including free:  transportation for jail and prison visits, back to school supplies and holiday toy distributions, glasses and eye exams. My first legal case won release for a dying prisoner (AIDS) and helped force the release of 53 terminally ill NYC prisoners in 1987. My pro se, free legal work has also resulted in: 7 prisoners being released; termination of deportation proceedings against the breadwinners for 2  families with young children; and  set precedents in the Massachusetts’ Appeals Court, United States District Court, United States Immigration Court and before the Board of Immigration Appeals.  I'm asking my community to help me to continue this fight from a stable base of operations, which means not being on the street.  THANK YOU for your support. Since the last donation I received I've helped an ex-prisoner not lose his business and I am in the process of helping 3 other families. Now I need my community's help. Unless I can get $2,200.00 by June 5, 2019, both I and my partner will be homeless.
