Community development volunteering in Fiji

This summer I will be working on a 4-week volunteering project in Fiji. As part of my aim to raise money for the project, I will be running both the Nottingham Half Marathon in February and the Putney/Fulham Half Marathon in April.

I will be working alongside local people on a range of community development initiatives in the Tailevu and Lomaiviti Province of Fiji. In comparison to other areas of Fiji, this district is relatively untouched by tourism and there are few sources of income for the local community.

On this project, I will be involved with a diverse variety of key initiatives involving themes such as:

- Freshwater management
- Education enrichment
- Environmental monitoring
- Mapping
- Income generation
- Waste management
- Health awareness
- Women’s empowerment
- Sustainable agriculture practice

The goals and priorities of this expedition are discussed and determined in collaboration with the local communities of the Dawasamu District. 

Overall, the program aims to assist villagers to adapt their livelihoods in response to the changing pressures on traditional life due to both environmental and social change. The program focuses on empowering communities by actively engaging important issues involved with the factors that inform their quality of life, such as access to fresh water, access to education, food security, and options for income generation.

My aim is to raise £400 before May. I would be extremely grateful for any size donations, and I am sure the work which I will complete on this project will benefit locals in the Dawasamu District massively.
