Colin Cares Foundation, Inc. is an organization that has been established to bring about Mental Health Awareness and Education to S. Florida Communities, where fear and stigmatization prevent individuals from seeking the appropriate treatment necessary in order to deal with a mental health illness. 1 in 4 Americans have a mental health diagnosis. There is absolutely no shame in learning about or identifying with Mental Illnesses such as Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, Substance Abuse and many other diagnoses. However, so many people, especially from the African-American, Caribbean, Hispanic and LGBT communities miss out on their opportunity to live their fullest potential secondary to missed diagnoses, seeking advice from their general practitioners who are not mental health practitioners, and/ or not seeking help or assistance at all. Mental Health Illness is stigmatized in many of these cultures. The unfortunate circumstance of many mental health illnesses that are not properly identified and left untreated may lead to dangerous behaviors and/or suicide. Life is volatile, always evolving, and in that hour of need, it is possible to find help, before it's too late. The time is Now. The Conversation needs to start Now. Colin Cares Foundation seeks to establish the appropriate resources to promote Awareness and Education to dispel the negativity and stigma associated with mental illness here in S. Florida. Colin Cares Foundation will also be the driving force to bring about and guide individuals to seek appropriate treatment. Colin Cares Foundation will focus its attention on creating and implementing strategies to reduce the rates of suicide by implementing suicide prevention plans and other mental health safety plans.
