My name is Tricia Cavallaro. More than 25 years ago I was diagnosed with RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) a progressive eye disorder.
For a time I was able to continue my work as a Para Professional educator working with young children with Special Needs. However when I requested an adaptive reading device ( a CCT scanner) I was pushed out of my job. Today I cannot read without some assistive technology. I must rely on public transportation or friends for transportation because I cannot drive. Skiing, tandem bike riding, hiking, and travel are still favorite pastimes but require the assistance of a sighted companion.
But now, I have a unique opportunity to participate in a clinical trial involving a stem cell procedure that may stop the progression of this eye disorder and possibly even restore my vision.
The study does not pay for travel or accommodations and if I am selected to participate I will be required to make at least ten (10) round trips from my home in Idaho to California at a cost of approximately $15,000.
