The Problem – a growing garbage mountain in Malawi
Almost everyone is guilty of throwing down thousands of items of rubbish every day. Non-degradable plastics, metals and glass cover the landscape. They block drainage systems or get washed away and pollute our water sources and the lake.
“It is time to tackle this life-threatening issue which is a danger to our children. My son cut his hand open on a smashed beer bottle when playing on the beach.” Sheena Tsatawe, Resident, Cape Maclear
The Solution – our 3-step approach to remove the mountain
1. ENGAGE: launch an anti-littering, anti-dumping pollution awareness campaign through schools, local businesses and community groups.
2. INVOLVE: motivate and empower groups at all levels of the community to plan, lead and participate in clean-up activities throughout the year.
3. ACT: hold an organised clean-up in the village twice a month culminating in an annual Clean Cape Maclear Day to review and celebrate progress and plan further action needed.
We need clean-up materials, waste disposal facilities and waste removal services. We also need educational materials.
"We are ready to go. You can help us start. Thank you for any support you are able to give us." John Matewere, Team Leader
