Cambodia Clean Well-Water Project 2019

THE NEED: located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia has endured, and continues to experience, great hardship due to various economic, political and environmental factors. The lack of basic infrastructure in rural areas, coupled with a harsh climate and deforestation, has made access to clean water ever more challenging as sources such as lakes and rivers continue to dry up. The people living in these affected areas cannot find clean water to drink or to use for cooking or sanitation and are forced to travel great distances, often by foot, to access water in other areas.
OUR GOAL: to raise money to build water well systems in these areas where the need is greatest. In the past we have successfully built well systems in a few rural communities with donations solely from friends and family who heard about this project by word-of-mouth. One well can serve a small community of about 10 families, and so we are looking to replicate our past success on a larger scale.
USE OF FUNDS: monies raised will go towards expenses relating to the construction of water wells, including: hiring of contractor to survey land and perform drilling to underground water source; materials for construction of well platform; and maintenance. Based on prior experience, the average cost for construction of a well can vary between $300 and $2,500 depending on location and geography. We are aiming to build 50 well systems in different rural areas, and we hope to have enough funds raised by the end of 2019 to achieve that goal.
ABOUT MYSELF: I am a first-generation Cambodian immigrant to the US, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970's. It is my sincere desire and wish, along with other Cambodian-Americans in my community, to help those in the most vulnerable communities in Cambodia by providing relief for some of their most immediate and pressing needs, in this case: access to clean water. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated, and we thank you on behalf of those communities we are able to help!
