City Sprouts Farm veggie share giveaway!

City Sprouts Farm is raising funds to give away two or more CSA (community supported agriculture) shares this season. Your generous donation will provide two households (or more!) with a box of organically grown produce each week from June-October. A CSA is a way for community members to receive fresh locally grown food through a weekly veggie box, or “farm share.” Typically, CSA customers pay upfront for their produce and then pick up a box every week throughout the season. We are collecting donations from now until July 30th, 2020 to cover the cost of two shares we will give away for free this season.
Although food sales are considered a necessity, the future of farmer’s markets in Washington State and across the country remain uncertain because of COVID-19. Small farms are already particularly vulnerable due to very low profit margins, and many (City Sprouts included) rely heavily on income from farmer’s markets. City Sprouts Farm, like many other farms, is turning towards a CSA program to make produce safer and more accessible while also ensuring a reliable income stream for our business. To create a more economically inclusive food system, we offer our CSA on a sliding scale, allowing subscribers to pay what they can. We hope this enables more members of our community to participate in the CSA while also ensuring fair compensation for us farmers.
A median-priced CSA share costs $480 for the entire 20 week season. Our goal is to raise at least $960 to cover the cost of two full shares to be donated to individuals or families in need.
Examples of factors we will consider when selecting who our free shares will go to are are follows:
-those with health vulnerabilities
-those with restrictive medical situations
-those with lower earning power
-those on fixed income/ seniors
-those with medical bills not covered by insurance
-those with multiple dependents
-those facing immigration related challenges/ refugees, etc.
Any amount you can contribute to our free CSA campaign will provide the means to provide thoughtfully grown food to people who will benefit deeply from it. We are so grateful for your donation and the opportunity to grow and share nourishing food with this community!
About City Sprouts Farm:
City Sprouts Farm is a small scale diversified vegetable farm in the heart of Bellingham, Washington. We are a women run, urban farm developing and preserving agricultural land in the Birchwood neighborhood. Our primary goal is to provide healthy and affordable produce for our community. We use sustainable growing practices, prioritizing soil health and biodiversity.
We would like to recognize that the land we are farming on is the traditional homeland of the Lummi nation, Swinomish tribe, Nooksack tribe, and other federally recognized and unrecognized tribes. We are visitors here.
