One Fire Church took over a 45 bed mens recovery & transition center, formerly known as the Spirit of Life on June 1, 2019. The center was renamed The City of Refuge. The vision of my husband John and I is to have a faith based place of refuge for men , where they can come have HOPE and experience healing, recovery & freedom, while having the support they need and guidance, as they transitioned into a healthy and beautiful new life. This mission is heavy on our hearts, because my husband has experienced such freedom and hope from his own life choices, and I myself lost a brother to heroin.
Upon this journey to take over this center, we had amazing support from many volunteers, financial supporters, and the community to make this place habitable, comfortable, clean, and safe. We utilized every resource we had. With supporters help, The City of Refuge was transformed in a very short timeframe. 16 men resided and called the center home. Many of these men bringing to the center everything they owned. In this short time we saw God move in many of their lives and were blessed to see lives changing. Men for the first time finding freedom, purpose, & walking in the TRUTH of their identities and who God created them to be. ❤️
On June 19, 2019... lightening struck and the facility caught fire! The City of Mount Dora’s Heroic Firemen came and eventually the fire was put out, but the fire left the City of Refuge in shambles and inhabitant-able. The men lost their belongings and the place they felt safe & secure.
The devastation is great, but our God is greater!! We will not give up, we will not be shaken, and we will not let this destroy us! We plan to start over and make this an even more beautiful place of serenity, recovery & deliverance. We know we cannot do this alone! We know it takes the hearts of many to make this possible!
John and I, on behalf of One Fire Church and the City of Refuge ask that you consider partnering with us to rebuild the center. With your help, The City of Refuge can be restored!!! If you can help financially, or if you are an electrician, contractor, plumber, or have any licensing or experience that can help make this place great again, we would appreciate anything you can do to help!
