The Center for Interfaith Cooperation is producing a video that explores the power of parenting in different religious traditions and cultures. Several families from diverse faith traditions are followed as they guide their children from birth to maturity in the context of their religious beliefs. This film will be a vibrant educational film showing the power of different faith traditions having similar outcomes for their children as they grow to maturity.
"Being, Belonging, Bearing, Becoming: Religious Families, Community and the Power of Diversity in Parenting"
Being – the welcoming of the child into the family at birth. The video examines the way children are welcomed into the world from a faith perspective such as dedications, baptisms, and various newborn ceremonies.
Belonging – guiding the child to find their place in the faith community. The video will explore how parents teach generosity and involve their children in acts of service.
Bearing – when children are asked to make a deeper commitment to the faith. When do various faith traditions ask children to make a deeper commitment? Examples include wearing the turban (dastaar) in Sikhism, wearing the headscarf for Muslim young women, going through confirmation for Catholics and some Protestant sects, the priesthood for Mormon children and the Bar / Bat Mitzvah for Jewish children.
Becoming – when children are sent out to make their own way in the world. The video illustrates how parents send their children into the world through a mission, military service, college, weddings or via various blessings.
Each section will visually explore the uniqueness in bringing up children in the context of their own faith tradition. The differences each faith tradition at similar stages of the life of the child(ren) will show the richness in cultural diversity and method, but ultimately show a similar outcome of a child prepared to go off on their own as a well-prepared citizen of the world.
The video will be premiered on November 11 2017 at a Spirit and Place event that will encourage discussion with the families in the film as well as inetractive exercises and simulations. In 2018 the video will be screened and discussed at congregations and library branches. Filming starts in August and continues until mid-October.
This video will be a unique resource for families and congregations. It will go beyond teaching abut practices of different religious traditions. It will be a means to spark stimulating conversations about how we can contribute to a better society.
