Christmas in Lapa Part IV - Books Hostel

Many of you reading this will have seen Lapa first-hand and will be aware of the social and economic issues that the neighbourhood and the people who live there face day to day. For those of you who are not familiar with Lapa then let me tell you it is an amazing place, however, you would soon notice that there are a lot of people less fortunate than us that live here, on the street. These people may suffer from mental illness, addiction, health problems or, as we often discover when talking with them, simply just be shit out of luck!
So, in 2015 a band of merry, generous and often drunk and shirtless men decided to give something back to our beloved neighbourhood and home and so was born Christmas in Lapa! This year marks our fourth edition and our mission is simple. We aim to celebrate and spread the Christmas joy with our neighbours and friends, giving them a day that they otherwise would not have at a time of the year that we take being with loved ones, drinking and eating excessively, for granted.
From a personal perspective, this will be my third Christmas in Lapa and I can genuinely say that Christmas in Lapa is one of the highlights of my year. I can only imagine that sometimes the homeless people here often feel invisible, forgotten and that nobody cares about them or loves them. To dedicate one day of the year to remind them that this is not true is the least we can do, but we need your help and support to realise this.
On the day we will feed between 200-250 people, and we won`t be feeding them any old food. Our beloved Adriana will weaving her magic, preparing and cooking all the food herself, as she does every year, cursing anybody who dare set foot in her kitchen during the process.
We will provide Christmas bags filled with hygiene and toilet products, flip flops and other useful items.
We will give away the clothes that have accumulated in the hostel over the course of the year
Free haircuts will be offered too
And, of course, we will invite them to stay with us during the day for a chin wag (a chat) and to revel in the festivities and Christmas spirit. No alcohol though, Captain Felipe tends to go overboard so we banned the serving of alcohol on the day.
So, what are we writing all this for and essentially, what the fuck do we want from you. Well, we are asking you to donate, be generous and support something that is extremely important to our community. A few dollars, Euros our Pounds will go a long way to helping us achieve our target of providing a special day inspired by your empathy, compassion and love…!
Seriously though, we do recognise that you have all, most likely, been hounded for donations for this and that all year round, however, we are willing to bet that a vast majority of you reading this have been to Lapa and Rio and that you certainly had an absolute fucking blast here. This is your opportunity to give a little something back to the place that gave you some of the best memories (those that you can remember anyway), times and friendships of your life! DO NOT BE A TORY, PLEASE LISA!
