Christie and Graeme are adopting!
Beschermde donatie
The novel coronavirus has put a real damper on our 10th anniversary plans, so we decided to pivot: we're ready to adopt a baby.
Adoption has been on our hearts since we started dating over 13 years ago, especially because one of us (Christie) is adopted. Even more so, adoption is important to us because we've experienced chosen family firsthand since moving across the country to Ontario nearly ten years ago.
Since we got married in the summer of 2010, we've both finished grad school, traveled a bunch, lived in southern Africa, bought our first home, and built a strong community of friends here in Ottawa. Plus, we've run out of decks to build and bathrooms to renovate, so naturally, our next challenge is parenting.
Right now, our hope is for a domestic, private adoption. Part of that process involves finding a birth mother. That can sometimes be done through provincial agencies, but it can also come from personal contacts.
Private adoption is also prohibitively expensive (estimated between $20,000-$25,000 in total), and that's before any of the associated costs for raising a child. Some of the costs include administrative work, ministry and legal fees, counselling for birth parents, mandatory training, and home visits. Any financial contributions to this fund will go directly toward covering some of these costs.
In short, the ways you can help are:
- Help us connect to a birth mom.
- Pray for the safe and healthy arrival of our baby.
- Contribute financially.
We welcome your support and your questions. Thank you!
