CHILVS CANCER CIRCUIT

Donation protected
Quite a few months ago I set myself a goal to run the MS (multiple sclerosis) Half Marathon, and I failed to achieve my goal. However today, I managed to run the 5km run for MS.

A favourite quote of mine from Michael Jordan is “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” A great motto to live by I believe. Although I failed to meet my goal of running the half marathon, I managed to achieve today’s goal of running the 5km run in under 30 minutes. The reason behind my goal of running the half marathon was to be a starting point for a challenge I have been planning for a while now.

As you may well know, Dad passed away from mesothelioma last year, and for his treatment he had to make the journey to Melbourne. (For those who haven’t heard of mesothelioma before – it is a rare form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos) The journey from Natimuk Road to St Vincent’s Hospital was a 610km round trip, one that Dad and Mum shared through great adversity. So the challenge I have set for myself is to run that 610km return trip that Dad had to endure on a regular basis. I know, I can hear you all saying there is not a chance in hell I can run that far! And yes, I think I am a little crazy for even thinking of attempting this.

So the aim is that by the end of 2019 I will have accumulated the 610km of running in total (which equates to at least 2.25km a day), and in doing so I aim to raise $10,000 for a few charities. I chose this challenge as running any distance more than a few hundred meters has never been one of my strengths, and I wanted to challenge myself. Also, the logo of Dad’s business was frequently referred to as the ‘Running Man’.

I have chosen to split the money raised between a few organisations related to Dad’s illness, including the Cancer Council Victoria and the Bernie Banton Foundation. I also plan to donate to a couple of other organisations which have touched my close friends and family, including the Royal Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Beyond Blue. To donate, there is a link at the bottom of this post to my GoFundMe page. All donations, regardless of amount, are greatly appreciated.

Ps… There is another little bonus part to this challenge. Since Dad passed I have not shaved my beard, and I rarely receive any positive feedback regarding my facial hair, with most telling me to get rid of the disgusting and unappealing growth. So to all those who detest the only hair I can grow on my head, here is your chance to get rid of it! I will allow the person or group who donates the most money to have the honours of shaving off my beard. A little extra incentive for some to donate.
