Local Elementary Student Inspires Safety Day
3rd Grader Leads March & Moment of Silence
Glen Oak 3rd grader Chang Weisberg is no stranger to activism. Two years ago he fought to stop a local Verizon cell tower from being installed in his residential neighborhood of San Dimas, CA. His efforts as a first grader lead to the first Los Angeles City County Board of Supervisors ruling against a cell tower in nearly twenty years. Today, his mission is to support the incredible movement of the MSD High School students who are fighting for gun control after enduring the tragic Valentine's mass shooting. After watching Emma Gonzalez's passionate speech demanding action from the United States government, Chang and his parents decided to do something to support her cause. "Well, I just think we should do everything to protect the kids," says the spunky eight year old. His parents researched some ways for their son to participate in the national movement. "We reached out to his school PTA and leadership. We were able to meet with Glen Oak's principal to help Chang and his students launch the first annual Glen Oak School Safety Day," says Chang's mother Pilar. "We were inspired by the National School Walk Out scheduled to take place this Wednesday March 14th at 10:00am with students, parents, and teachers from around the country. We're thrilled Chang and his fellow classmates, teachers, and PTA are establishing a day dedicated to school safety. Participating students and teachers will stage a peaceful march at the school's playground at 10:00 am and partake in a moment of silence for seventeen seconds. One second for each person who passed away in the Parkland, Florida tragedy," says Chang's father. Ironically, the school had previously scheduled to practice their "Run, Hide, Fight" drills on the same day as the National Walk Out. Chang plans on starting a Gofundme page and continue his support of the MSDHS students by participating in the March of our Lives in Washington D.C. on March 24th. He wants to do anything he can to support common sense gun control and victim's rights like Marcy's Law.
