“The Bail Project, Inc. is a non-profit organization designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system ‒ one person at a time.” (The Bail Project website)
They are a nationwide organization currently operating in many cities around the country, including New York. They have paid bail for 10,545 since their foundation, using the payment of bail as an act of solidarity with the community members they are helping. Furthermore, they provide pretrial services for affected individuals (such as subsidized transportation services and childcare) to minimize obstacles that might jeopardize someone’s ability to attend their trial.

We, Columbia Barnard Women’s Rowing, stand against the systemic racism and prejudice that pervades the country and society we live in. America has a long and painful history of violence perpetrated against Black people. As allies of the Black Lives Matter movement, we want to be active participants in bringing a long-overdue end to this cycle of oppression.
We recognize that rowing is a sport heavily rooted in white privilege. We pledge to do better in the rowing community and beyond through sustained action and continuous learning. We promise to hold each other accountable to have difficult conversations and to work to become better allies.
Our first step towards creating a concrete plan that puts our words into actions is through a fundraiser. Starting today, we will be raising money for The Bail Project.
