COTS FOR HURRICANE MARIA RELIEF
Ruined, soaked furniture outside homes, downed trees, structural debris. Fences, windows and doors that were not able to sustain the wind force and stay in place.
The scene just described pretty much sums up the community of La Playa in Punta Santiago, Humacao, Puerto Rico where ruined furniture and mattresses in front of homes is a constant reminder of the widespread devastation for this small community.
During hurricane Maria, this area sustained winds of up to 200 mph. This created a storm surge with flood water entering homes between 3 to 6 feet high- this included ocean, river and sewer water. The people of Punta Santiago lost everything.
I had the opportunity of visiting this community as part of a group of volunteers, and although they’ve lost absolutely everything, they’ve received our visit with outmost optimism and grateful for their lives. The majority of the people share the same sentiment as a man I met while he was clearing debris from his house, “I’ve lost everything, I don’t even have where to sleep, I live here, alone, but I’m ok".
The purpose of this initiative is to be able to buy and take 50 cots mainly to the La Playa en Punta Santiago community in Humacao, and if we are able, to also provide a 'kit' to include the cot, sheets and a solar lamp. Many friends have asked how they can help after hearing the stories of the daily living conditions we have seen in Punta Santiago. We’re sure even your smallest donation will help.

CATRES PARA AYUDAR AFECTADOS POR MARIA
muebles dañados y mojados afuera de las casas, árboles caídos, escombros y restos de techos, verjas, ventanas y puertas que no lograron aguantar y mantenerse en su lugar
La escenografía antes mencionada representa la comunidad de La Playa en Punta Santiago, Humacao
donde la presencia de muebles dañados frente a las casas incluyendo muchos mattresses constituyen su actual realidad.
Con el paso del huracán Maria, este sector recibió vientos de hasta 200 millas por hora, como consecuencia de la marejada ciclónica el agua entró a las casas entre 3 a 6 pies de altura incluyendo agua del mar, río y aguas negras de los alcantarillados. Las personas lo perdieron todo.
Tuve la oportunidad de visitar el sector como parte de un grupo de voluntarios, esta comunidad fue impactada fuertemente, sin embargo nos recibe de manera optimista y agradecida de estar bien. La mayoría de estas personas como nos dijo un señor que limpiaba su casa llena de escombros, "lo perdí todo, no tengo ni donde dormir, vivo aquí solo pero estoy bien".
La iniciativa y el propósito de esta campaña es poder comprar y llevar 50 catres principalmente para la comunidad de La Playa en Punta Santiago, Humacao y si es posible un 'kit' que incluya catre, sábana y lámpara solar. A todos nuestros amigos que le hemos mencionado las condiciones de vida que vimos han querido ayudar y estamos seguros que la más mínima aportación ayudará.
