Carts for Chrysalis Center's food pantry

Hartford, Connecticut is one of the most impoverished cities in America with a 31% poverty rate. As such, there are many services in the area such as food pantries and shelters. However, many people end up living off these services their whole lives without ever escaping poverty. For many years this has lead to generational poverty: people are born into poverty and are never given the opportunity to lift themselves out, so their children grow up in poverty and succumb to the same fate.

However, there are organizations that have identified this problem and are working to combat it by addressing the root cause. One of these organizations is Chrysalis Center. Chrysalis Center's Freshplace program is an updated take on the traditional food pantry. Freshplace is stocked with healthy foods based on the recommended portions of each food group. Those who rely on Freshplace are given far more than just food. They are given counseling in how to shop and eat healthily, interview for a job, be successful in a workplace environment, and are connected with other organizations in the area. Through time spent with Freshplace, people and families are given the chance to escape poverty and become self sufficient, ending the cycle of generational poverty.

However, there are those who rely on Freshplace but cannot make it to the food pantry in person. Some of these people are physically disabled, others lack a suitable method of transportation, still others are stuck working several part time jobs to make ends meet and can't always make it to the food pantry frequently enough to eat every day. That is where you come in.

I am raising funds to buy carts for Freshplace. They will use the carts to organize, store, and transport food to these families often enough that they will never have to worry about where they will get their next meal.

My goal is to raise $745, which will buy 20 carts. However, any extra money that is donated will be used to buy extra carts, so I hope to exceed this goal to help as many families as possible.

The carts will be bought and assembled at the end of March, so I will be collecting funds on March 24. Any contribution is greatly appreciated and goes a long way to keeping a family fed and, eventually, giving them the opportunity to become self sufficient. Thank you all for your support!

Update: Thank you all so much for your support! I've updated my goal to $1,100, which would cost the cost of 30 carts.
