It hurts to put it into words, but my brother, Carmelo Chirico, passed away on December 9th, 2021 from pancreatic cancer. In 2018, my brother battled both prostate and colon cancer while a few months later was diagnosed and struggling with Parkinson’s and Type II diabetes. In October of 2021, less than two months ago, Carmelo was rushed to the ER with the unexpected detection of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the world’s second most deadliest cancer and is usually found and detected in its later stages.
For these two months, I’ve seen my brother, his wife Karen Toti Chirico, and our family struggle emotionally, mentally, and physically while helplessly watching him in the throes of this vicious disease. Being the fighter that Carmelo is, he held on for that long which is both a godsend and a struggle when life support was our last option of care. As only one could imagine, watching someone on life support is difficult. To have visited him in his final weeks whilst on a ventilator was bittersweet, but also, a blessing as we were fortunate to hear his voice and feel his touch intermittently while in and out of consciousness. He is now at peace, and our family is trying to pick up the pieces of losing a dedicated father and beloved husband.
The unpredictability of his final days and what that meant for our family was painful and, at times, almost too much to bear in a sense of what was to come, decisions to be made, and acceptance of what laid before us. My brother’s family is now facing uncertainty on how to survive both physically, emotionally, and financially with his loss. It is for these reasons, I ask in earnest for any contributions to the financial burden of medical expenses facing my family. Any donation through this GoFundMe account would be directly funneled towards tackling the medical bills severely impacting my sister-in-law and her family.
On behalf of the Chirico, Toti, and Cordiano family, we sincerely appreciate the love and support we have received from all who knew Carmelo. Any contribution towards this account would leave his wife, Karen, and his family time to grieve and to prepare for a future that no one ever anticipated without him.
Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to support my family through this unexpected loss. Your prayers, love, personal stories, and support of my brother has meant the world to us.
