Capoeira Compassion Build JUCH

THE CAUSE: JEEWAN UTTHAN CHILDREN'S HOME (JUCH), NEPAL
JUCH has been saving children's lives since 2002 and supports 37 children aged between 2 to 17 years. The children have suffered great tragedies in the past, they are victims of natural disasters, political instability, violence, poverty.

I want to raise £20000 to support 37 children, this works out to £540 per each child for 1 year, This is for Jeewan Utthan Children's Home in Pharping, Nepal who I have been working with since 2015. This will assist with the food, education, medical, utility bills, construction, improvements, excursions, clothing, skills building for 1 year. All the funds will be used directly for the children.

The children love to study, dance, play and care for each other and the world. With the right environment, education, love the children can lead outstanding lives but it’s a great challenge. JUCH does not receive any funds from the government, a small fund is raised by Jeewan Utthan Australia since 2015, but this is not sufficient for the running of home. Private donors assist with the homes expenses.

Before 2015 the home was in rented accommodation and had to move locations many times, a very unstable situation. After the devastating Earthquake, in 2015, 10 more children came to the home, including a 7 month old baby and her sister, they were rescued from their crumbled house, little one was trapped for hours, her mother shielded her and died saving her. At the home there were not enough resources or space but there was no choice but to save the children, not to do this would put their lives at more risk. After the earthquake a beautiful paddy field, in the hillside, was leased for 15 years in Pharping, to create a safe secure home for all the children, the construction of the home is ongoing.

I have learned of many tragic stories but JUCH has come a long way and found great kindness, love and compassion in this world. This is a genuine organisation truly helping children in need. JUCH needs all the support it can get.

MY STORY
I am Suroj Lama, born in the UK and I worked in IT. I have practised Capoeira for 20 years, a Brasilian Art combining music, dance, acrobatics. With this beautiful game I have learnt many life skills to overcome great tragedies. I share this Art in a social way as a therapeutic, healing, loving practise.

In the devastating earthquake many families, children lost their lives, were orphaned, helpless, homeless and disabled. The situation was miserable and I started to support many children suffering in unfortunate conditions; I travelled to Nepal twice a year in my holidays funding my own expenses. I played many times on the streets of the UK for Nepal in the sun, rain, cold and raised small funds and lots of moral support. Many children gave me all their savings, homeless gave me all their money and friends played and contributed for Nepal, lots of wonderful support. I played Capoeira with the children of JUCH and many who were living on the streets. Everyone was deeply traumatised; they felt hopeless and thought they were going to die many times during the earthquake aftershocks.

Since 2016 at JUCH I funded an earthquake proof home for the small children, septic tank, toilets, washroom, connected electric and water. I provide assistance regularly for food, fruits, vegetables, medical, school, clothes, gas, growing vegetables. It has been challenging, I used my savings from my IT work to support. In 2017 I moved to Nepal to directly support, I give all my time and resources freely. I give free regular Capoeira, English classes for JUCH and hundreds of other children. I work for free for JUCH, I donate to JUCH and raise small funds. Also in 2017 my UK Capoeira friends assisted in building another house for JUCH. Capoeira has helped many children greatly to create a home, heal their spirit, bring hope and happiness.

THE COSTS
I want to raise £20000 for 1 year to assist in the support of 37 children.

Food: Daily healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, fruits, vegetables..

Education: school tuition fees, exercise books, study books, stationery, exam fees, education excursion, school picnic. Exercise books, stationary are a never ending expense, it is a great tension. I want to buy a bulk amount from wholesale and we can save 50% on our costs. At our home every penny is precious; we do not waste anything, our children study very hard and are always in need of materials, Also we want to employ a tutor to assist the children in study, homework.

Medical: hospital, dental, medication expenses, in my time in Nepal I have taken the children a few times to hospital, it is a great expense, in Nepal because of the cost people do not go for treatment. We would like to have some cash for emergency medical treatment, with 37 children there is always someone ill or injured.

Utility bills: Gas, Electric, Water Bills, This a great expense as there is a lot of cooking, washing etc to do, we do not waste any of our resources.

Construction, Improvements: We are in process of constructing a permanent home, we need to complete a library, computer lab, staff room, entertainment room, mother’s room, peace garden, mini play park, all the existing buildings require a lot of interior work. The home needs investment for maintenance, furnishing, to improve safety, security, facilities, washing, bathroom, water etc. We are trying to make the home more suitable for the extreme weather; it is very cold and dusty in the winter, very wet in the rainy season, very hot and dusty in the summer.

Excursions: We want to make some special days for the children to go on simple excursions and give them some respite from their daily routine. I’ve taken the children on a few excursions, it always wonderful and challenging to create these experiences and very valuable for the development of the children.

Clothing: School uniform, school shoes, shoes, slippers, ties, belts, hair bands, seasonal, casual clothing etc. This is a great expense and challenge to support.

Skills Building:
Invest in art and handicrafts materials so the children can explore their creativity
Invest in sewing machine so they make, repair their clothes and save money.
Invest in materials to make healthy natural toiletries. Toiletries are also great expense for our home.
Invest in gardening, we have a vegetable garden and grow organic produce, we want to continue this, create a beautiful garden for the children to learn and play. The children will receive natural education and inspire and motivate them to live in harmony with nature. They can eat healthily and connect with nature.
Invest in kitchen facilities, oven so children can practise healthy cooking, baking, improve meal options.
The children love to dance, sing, play music, I want to invest in simple traditional instruments for the children to learn, play, and entertain themselves in a natural way.

All the skills, creativity will be of great benefit and help to develop the home a wonderful sustainable way and give the children a great advantage in the future.

 HOW YOU CAN HELP
The goal is a target but the more we can raise the better, it will be helpful in many ways. Our priorities for the funds raised are shelter, energy, food, education. Funds will be also used to make the children’s lives comfortable and happy. Most of the above is a wish list, the home has always been in critical condition in the past and we always have to prioritise urgent requirements, recently the situation has improved with the building of our new home, but it has been a great expense to start. To help you can donate any amount big or small, a little money can go a very long way, sharing this will also help greatly. It is a great task but there are many children and with many helping hands we can do this. We are looking to a beautiful, bright future for the wonderful children you can make an incredible difference.
