Support The Cancer Recovery Fund For Baba Shaka

Important: Dessalines "Dezz" Gant is the person we have added as the beneficiary of these funds. As many, if not most of you know, Dezz is Shaka's son, and per the agreement of the whole family, he is our campaign leader. Dezz has set up a special bank account to track and manage the funds we are raising. Dezz intends to determine how the funds are spent and managed, by working directly with Shaka to make the decisions, and will be supporting him with paying for his treatments, and any medical and personal expenses that will need to be taken care of and paid while he is fighting for his life. These expenses will include: Transportation, medical treatments, insurance payments, medications, supplements, moving expenses, food, water, and any other expenses that will arise for Shaka's care and treatment.

Story: Shaka has life threatening liver cancer and urgently needs support to receive medical and alternative care through integrative medicine. The cancer care that has been chosen for his recovery is going to cost at least $40,000 or more for his treatments.  The the medical treatments, healthy, fresh foods, natural medicines, herbs and supplements to support him all require income and monies that he doesn't have. Baba Shaka also needs to move as soon as possible. The house he is living in is substandard with abestos on the siding, sewage leakage on the side and black mold coming up from a leaky basement. The building owner won't fix it. He needs to live in a healthy environment as he recovers and receives care as well. He will need to remain in the Bay Area for his treatments and will need to be able to pay moving expenses and rent during this period.

Please support this father of six, and grandfather of seven, so that he can receive a better quality of medical care than he has been able to receive on medicaid. His condition continues to worsen under the local care that he is getting and we would like to send him to a cancer care clinic that is known for helping people recover and live longer. He is also in a lot of pain and we want to be able to support him to be able to afford quality medicine to help him get through this challenging time.

Shaka is a former political prisoner, a founding member and thought leader of the Black August Organizing Committee. He is a community warrior who  has been an internationally known activist, organizer, educator and advocate for over 50 years. He has worked tirelessly in the Bay area for the human rights of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated since he was released from prison in 1977.

Shaka has also mentored, taught and helped to raise many young people in our community. He has shared his knowledge and home, and helped to feed and has given shelter and safe space to many youth and community members. 

Now is the time to give because time is of the essence. The sooner we can improve the care Shaka is getting, the sooner we can save his life. Please give what you can and share this campaign widely.
