Cancer Patient and Asylum Applicant held by ICE for a Month

Ihsanullah Garay arrived in the US from Afghanistan in 2021 coming on a student visa. He later made an asylum claim as there was a credible threat against him by the Taliban stemming his previous work as a risk manager for a bank. Shortly after arriving in the US, Ihsanullah was diagnosed with brain cancer. Needless to say, his path for the last 4 years has been difficult with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. He moved from New York City to Lowell to be near his cousin, Abdul. While still in treatment for his cancer, Ihsanullah was supporting himself working for food delivery services. While working in Methuen, he got lost and asked a man for directions. That man turned out to be an ICE agent and took him into custody. Ihsanullah was taken on 9/14/25 and spent the next month in ICE custody in Rhode Island, Florida, and Georgia. He was finally released on bond in Georgia and was forced to take a bus home to Massachusetts, a 36-hour trip, because he was unable to fly due as ICE took his identification in Massachusetts and never gave it back. Ihsanullah will use these funds to catch up on rent and utility payments, to resume his cancer treatments, and for legal fees in his ongoing asylum application. Please donate if you can and share this GoFundMe either way. Let’s demonstrate that America can be kind. Thank you for standing with him.
