Cameron's Companions - Team Ireland

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Five crazy cyclists from Ireland, Martin, Paul, Andrew, Marek and Keith are undertaking a rather ridiculous cycle ride to raise money for a very good cause. For several years, there has been a like-minded bunch who have been riding bikes and raising money.

Starting in London in 2013 this group rode across to Paris,

In 2015 they rode from Paris to Geneva,

2017 was Geneva to Nice

And 2019 Nice to Carcassonne.

We have grown in numbers over the years and now we have five riders from Ireland who join riders from as far away as South Africa to close to home London.

The journey so far has covered c2500 Km and we have cycled the height of Mount Everest more than three times over.

The small matter of the pandemic got in the way of our adventures, but we are ready to get going again. This September we are planning to continue the journey starting the ride in Toulouse and then going over the Pyrenees to Girona in Spain. This will cover over 600km in 4 days and we will again be riding greater than the height of Mount Everest, with a cumulative altitude of c9000 meters. This is an enormous challenge so please give us all the support you can.

This year we are raising money for Cameron’s Companions, a charity in the final stages of being set up in memory of Cameron Smart, the son of our friend and industry colleague Nick Smart. Cameron lost his long battle with the monster that is depression in October 2022, aged 31.

Cameron was a healthy, active, successful, and popular man, at the very center of a large and loving family. Unfortunately, depression and suicidal thoughts do not discriminate, and he battled those demons for over 10 years. The Smart family and Cameron’s friends are committed to taking on Cameron’s mission, to raise awareness of men’s mental health and provide instant support for those suffering from suicidal thoughts. Cameron’s Companions strives to provide ‘An informal & easy fast-track service for men that have been having suicidal thoughts and need advice & support which they cannot access for themselves. We try to create a “listening ear” for people that don’t want the formality of the standard doctor referral system and who want something as easy as texting/ringing a friend”
