The mission of the Buffalo Peace House is to provide safe housing and facilitate access to legal counsel for refugees and United States asylum seekers. Since opening their doors in 2013 they have provided shelter to individuals and families fleeing persecution from 17 different countries. Peace House supports two small residences, sheltering up to 26 individuals. With limited resources and hard-working staff and volunteers, we are creating hope and offering a path to freedom, one family at a time.
Many of us do not have to look back too many generations to recall our own families’ struggles for freedom from oppression, persecution and hunger and are grateful for the lives they have made for us in the United States.
But the struggles continue. Consider the horrific news we have heard over the last few years from places like Syria, Somalia and Honduras. These are the stories we hear at Buffalo Peace House every day. Whatever our political points of view, we all feel compassion for those who suffer and wish there were a way to make a difference. Buffalo Peace House is a way.
We have worked with Peace House since it opened in 2013, investing our time, money and support. Last month Cynthia went shopping for winter clothing with young women from Rwanda and Iraq. Boy are they in for a shock as their first Buffalo winter begins! We know first hand the miracles Peace House works in the lives of these individuals. In this season of giving we are asking our friends and family to help us build a new life in our community for those who have so little and have suffered so much.
