Let's Get Toni & Bud Wheels to Advocate & Educate!

My friend Toni Popkin, in Herndon, VA, is a traumatic brain injury survivor who does A LOT of community service. Toni and her service animal, Bud the Wonder Dog, frequently visit Capitol Hill to advocate for people with TBIs and other invisible disabilities. Additionally, they travel all around Northern Virginia and DC to visit and educate police departments, retail establishments, restaurants, and other businesses and organizations about invisible disabilities and the role of a service dog in enabling a person’s independence. An important part of their work is helping educate health care professionals and first responders about working with Brain Injured patients. Hearing from Toni first hand— and seeing Bud in action— is very impactful!
I’ve started this GoFundMe, along with co-organizer Philip Fleet, to raise $3,600 so that Toni, who lives on disability income, can get a used car which she desperately needs. Toni’s 2000 Toyota Corolla (with 160,000+ miles on it) was totaled in an accident more than a year ago, and since then she’s been forced to rely on Uber, Lyft and Senior Taxi. Sadly, although discrimination against people with service animals isn’t legal, many drivers pull up and see Bud (a yellow Labrador Retriever) and drive off, leaving Toni and Bud stranded.
In order to continue the good work they do in the world, they really need a car. If you, or a friend or family member, is disabled, you know how important it is to have someone who understands shine a light on their situation and advocate for them. I’m hoping that together we can raise the $3,600 that will empower Toni to continue her advocacy for others with disabilities.
