Buckingham VA COVID-19 Mutual Aid Fund

Donation protected
Buckingham Mutual Aid is a grassroots effort to provide emergency support to those most impacted by COVID-19 in rural Buckingham county, Virginia. Seeing that mutual aid groups in our neighboring big cities were overwhelmed with requests from the rural communities an hour away, a few residents of Buckingham county decided to start a more localized group.

In the less than two weeks that our hotline has been live, we've been able to deliver groceries, gift cards, or provide direct financial assistance to over 55 neighbors. Buckingham county is home to many elderly, disabled, and low income folks who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 and its economic impacts. We are a rural county where 20% of people were already living in poverty before COVID-19.

As of 4/28 we're working on filling 50 more requests for aid, and the calls continue to pour in. We need your help to fill these requests!

What is mutual aid? Mutual aid is neighbors helping neighbors when we can no longer rely on jobs, government subsidies, or non-profits to meet our basic needs. It is also a way of empowering communities to figure out how to meet their own needs in the future. Mutual aid is an effective strategy in this moment because it is done by members of the community, and has no overhead costs or salaries to pay. This means 100% of our donations go directly to folks in need.

How are the funds managed? Because we are not a non-profit, funds will go to a personal bank account. They will be distributed by 3 organizers of Buckingham Mutual Aid who will have access to the funds through Cash App, Venmo, and PayPal.

What are you going to spend the money on? Most of our requests are for grocery deliveries or grocery store gift cards. We will also spend the money on personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies for volunteers and households who we deliver to. Additionally, we will be making direct fund transfers of up to $150 to folks with other needs.

How much should I donate? Just think about how much you spend on groceries every time you go to the store. $50 will cover one grocery run for an individual. $250 will provide groceries for an elderly couple for the next month. $500 will feed a low-income family for a month. We encourage you to be generous, but any amount helps.

What else can I do? We'd love help spreading the word about this project, or suggestions on how to make it better. You can find out what we're up to on Facebook  or Twitter  .
