Broen Ensemble's 'Scottish Tales'

We are Broen Ensemble - a young and exciting string ensemble based in Scotland. Formed in 2017 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, we strive to perform works that are less well-known or rarely played, alongside more familiar masterpieces.  We performed our first concert together in 2017 at the RCS, and have been playing together since.

…And this is where you come in! The lack support for freelance musicians has been wholly apparent throughout the Coronavirus pandemic; this project will provide support to those who feel they have slipped through trust and government support scheme cracks, as well as aid in the continued professional development of performers and composers at the beginning of their career.

When not performing together, we work with some of the best orchestras in the UK such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Welsh National Opera as freelancers.  Due to the ongoing pandemic, this work has dried up for us, like so many, completely!

This project aims to provide work to 13 freelance performers, and to commission 4 new works from 2 established composers and 2 emerging composers. We want to explore the rich culture and history that Scotland has to offer; each commission will be based on Scottish myths, legends or folklore.  These works will be recorded (both audio and visual!) and the project will culminate with two performances at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who have been kind enough to allow us to use their venue for rehearsals and performances (thanks for your continued support, RCS!).

We need your help to find the last pot of money that will enable us to create this incredible opportunity for 13 freelance musicians and 4 composers to take part in this exciting project at a time when many are struggling to find work in the creative industries. Although we are hoping to be awarded some money from various funding bodies and charities, we still rely on finding £8000 ourselves for the people taking part to be paid a wage in accordance with Musician’s Union fees.

We are so grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide!

All our love,
