I'm not Carl. I am Britta’s dad, John.
Carl is the name Britta bestowed upon her stage 2 breast cancer! She also named her chemo’s - Stanley, Boris, and Dirk. Naming her cancer and chemos are indicative of how she is approaching this battle. Her CaringBridge entries bring tears flowing from laughter and those drenched in sorrow as Britta openly shares her journey.
Let me tell you about my oldest daughter Britta Dumke. I’ll skip the joyful years of childhood, the stressful years of adolescents, the searching years of adulting, and begin with the birth of Ebba, the most beautiful granddaughter in the world!
A number of people witnessed the birth of Ebba. Britta, of course, Ebba’s aunts, grandmother (Mimi), grandfather (Papa), and Grandma Georgi. Waiting outside was a wide array of other friends and family members. From the very beginning, Britta was surrounded by loving people to support her as a single mother. Britta and Ebba have created a loving family of two surrounded by a very diverse array of supportive family and friends. Britta is a creative, compassionate, dedicated lead teacher for toddlers and Ebba loves the first grade.
Britta was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer on January 17, 2021, and began the battle with Carl with the help of Stanley in early February. Even the loss of hair and nasty side effects from Stanley could not dimmish Britta’s attitude and faith. The real battle began in early June with the second round. This time Carl vs. Boris and Dirk. It is a nasty fight landing Britta being hospitalized at the University of Minnesota since June 16. The complication from the chemo and steroids include the need for an insulin pump to control her high blood sugar, several infected leg sores, a drop in oxygen, and potential blood clots.
Her humor, faith, and stamina are strong, but her body is getting weaker fighting all the side effects & infections. We are really thankful for the awesome medical staff and support team. The next phase of the battle with Carl is surgery, hopefully in August.
Britta has been unable to work since March and the Doctors have told her she may be able to return by December. Her present employer is not guaranteeing her a position if/when she is able to return. Needless to say, as a single mom this has put Britta and Ebba in a very precarious situation now and into the future.
We are setting a goal of $50,000 to help offset her medical bills and related expenses in addition to her loss of income. On behalf of Britta’s, Mom Miriam, Sisters Linnea, Elsa, Marya, step-mother Gerogi and myself thank you for reading all the way down to here and your consideration of joining the battle with Carl!
