Bring Physiotherapy to FAME Hospital in Tanzania!

Hello! My name is Kelly Wild. I'm a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I had the unique opportunity to visit Tanzania in the winter of 2023! While there, I was introduced to the hospital, FAME- Foundation for African Medicine and Education. I was blown away by their amazing, patient-centered care, their exhaustive efforts to provide care to even the most remote Tanzanian populations, and their seamless collaboration with doctors and volunteers from all over the world.

While visiting FAME, I spoke with their head nurses and administrators and learned that they had made great advancements in developing their surgical centers, maternity ward and child-care programs, and lab and imaging centers. However, I was disheartened to learn that there is not a single physical therapist on staff, nor are they able to hire one at this time due to funding. After speaking with them briefly, they asked me to stay for 3 months! I couldn't pull off an impromptu 3 month stay in the moment, but I knew I had to come back and SOON!!

Fast forward to now! I am planning on returning to FAME in January, 2024 to spend 2 weeks volunteering at the hospital. I will be teaching their nurses and staff about the importance and benefits of physical therapy practices for their patients. I will be providing physical therapy education to the staff and patients, as well as patients' families and caregivers. This presents a unique challenge as the needs and resources of each patient will be vastly different than what I'm used to seeing in the United States. However I am up to the task and excited to get started in engaging with the local community to raise awareness about the importance of physical therapy and preventive care.

This is a mission close to my heart, and I am reaching out to you today in hopes of securing the necessary funds to make this dream a reality.

How the funds will be used:

The funds raised will be allocated towards several critical aspects of this mission:

Travel, Accommodations, Transport: A significant portion of the funds will be used to cover my travel expenses to Tanzania and to provide accommodations during my stay.

Visa, Medical Registrations, Administration fees: Additional funds will be used to cover fees for securing approval for practicing physical therapy in Tanzania.
