Bring Nadeem and His Family to Canada

Nadeem* is a journalist who bravely reported on corruption in his home country of Pakistan. Accused of blasphemy by local officials for his work, Nadeem found himself in great danger. He was forced to flee with his wife Rahana or face imprisonment and death.
Nadeem, Rahana and their young daughter are now in Thailand, trapped in a system of refugee re-settlement that has dragged on for six years. The family has been largely imprisoned in a one room apartment, rarely able to go out for fear they will be discovered and deported.
When St. Mary's Church of Metchosin BC heard about Nadeem’s plight, we formed a committee to help bring him and his family to Canada. Local volunteers from the broader community are welcome to join.
Nadeem’s family are UNHCR refugees. However it will take a lot of work to bring them here. Our goal is to raise $24 000 by early 2021. These funds will be used for their travel to Canada and their living expenses when they settle here.
The Committee to Protect Journalists estimates that at least 53 journalists were killed in 2018 around the world, simply for shining light on corruption and crimes that otherwise would remain in the dark. Nadeem was not a “celebrity journalist” whose case attracts international attention. But he reported on stories that made him an enemy of the powerful and almost cost him his life. Until he makes it to Canada, he, his wife and his daughter remain in very real danger.
You can help free this family from limbo, and in the process, send a powerful message to those who use threats and fear to silence journalists. We believe that our small community has the energy, the love and the will to help Nadeem and his family escape and start fresh here.
